A maid of honor speech should last 3 to 5 minutes, about 400 to 650 words. A simple structure for a sister or best friend, what to avoid and how to rehearse.
A maid of honor speech should last 3 to 5 minutes — about 400 to 650 words at a natural pace. That’s enough for one or two real stories and a heartfelt toast, without losing a room full of hungry guests.
How many words?
| Target length | Words (≈ 130 wpm) |
|---|---|
| 2 minutes | ~260 |
| 3 minutes | ~390 |
| 4 minutes | ~520 |
| 5 minutes | ~650 |
Leave room for laughter, “aww”s and the occasional happy tear: if you have 5 minutes, write for about 4. Paste your draft into our words-to-minutes converter or word counter to check it.
A simple structure
- Who you are (15 seconds). “For those who don’t know me, I’m Emma, Sarah’s sister — and her roommate for eighteen very long years.”
- A story that shows who the bride is (1–2 minutes). Not a list of compliments: one specific moment that captures her.
- The moment you knew (1 minute). When you first saw her with her partner and realized this was it.
- A word for the partner (30 seconds). Welcome them, and say something true about what they bring out in her.
- The toast (15 seconds). Glasses up, both names, done.
If she’s your sister
You have a lifetime of material — that’s the danger. Pick one childhood memory and one adult moment that echo each other (the girl who always organized everyone is now marrying the one person who can keep up).
If she’s your best friend
Tell how you met in two sentences, then go straight to the story that defines your friendship. Skip anything that needs “you had to be there”.
What to avoid
- Inside jokes and nicknames nobody else understands.
- Embarrassing stories she wouldn’t want her new in-laws to hear.
- Talking about yourself more than about the couple.
- Reading word for word with your eyes glued to the page.
- Going over time — it’s the most common mistake, and the easiest to avoid.
Rehearse it out loud
Most people discover their speech is too long only when they say it for the first time. Read it aloud with a timer, cut what drags, and repeat until you can deliver it calmly in under your target time.
The Final Take app follows your voice as you rehearse, shows your pace and your time gap, and suggests what to trim. On a laptop, our free online teleprompter helps you practice reading naturally at the right speed.
